The Doge’s Palace on the Riva degli Schiavoni was the residence of the Doge, the highest and richest symbol of the venetian civilization, until the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797.
Inside you can visit the Museo dell’Opera sheltering in particular the originals of the famous majestic sculptured capitals (capitelli); the new route of the Prisons, over the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) in the marble building of the Da Ponte; the kitchens of the Doge in which nowadays is located the new elegant caffetteria.

The “court itinerary” brings you to the different rooms, seat of the government institutions of the venetian magistrature and the armoury with a rich and prestigious collection of weapons.

Recently the “Secret Itineraries” were opened. The room of the three leaders of the State Inquisitors (here you find also two paintings of the Fleming Jeronimus Bosch), the Offices of the Council of Ten and the “Chamber of Torment,” namely the torture chamber; moreover the practice of torture was in disuse already since the XVII century. Interesting are the rooms of the Superior Chancellery (Cancellaria Superiore), the place assigned to the Secretaries, members of that very intermediate class between the nobility and the lower classes which made up the backbone of the efficient venetian bureaucracy. Furthermore you can visit the Pozzi and the Piombi, the very famous prisons of the Serenissima.
